Sorry it’s a short blog this week but after avoiding Covid for two years I tested positive on Sunday and I’m self-isolating with some pretty nasty symptoms. The number of positive cases are going up in every part of Wales so please continue to take precautions and stay safe.
Congratulations

A new Head of Achievement and Partnership has been appointed within the Education Directorate. Rhodri Jones has served as a local government officer for over 15 years at third tier management level. Rhodri, who’s well-known across many departments, will start his new post next month. He already has oversight of a number of teams in the service area and has driven policy and strategy in key areas including Welsh education, education’s digital strategy and its response to Covid. I am sure you will wish Rhodri well in his new post.
I’m also pleased to say that Amy Hawkins, our interim Head of Service for Adult Services and Tackling Poverty, was yesterday confirmed as the permanent post-holder by the appointments committee. Amy’s leadership during the two years of the pandemic has been outstanding. With Amy’s leadership, adult services can look forward with confidence as we move into recovery and transformation in the months and years ahead. I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing Amy well in the role.
Beyond the call of duty
You may have seen some news coverage and video footage of an alleged attempted car theft in Gorseinon last Friday. One of our plastic waste crews saw the incident during their collection round and tried to prevent the incident by blocking a road and taking other steps. My thanks to the crew for doing their best in unusual and alarming circumstances, and I’m relieved nobody was injured.
Farewell
Ian Kennedy, who works in our Building Maintenance Team, is retiring at the end of the month after 47 years with the council. Thank you for your service, Ian, and after such a great stint with us, I wish you well for your retirement.
